A Citation for Honorary Fellow Mr. Liu Hongwei

Mr. LIU Hongwei is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Singyes Solar Technologies Holdings, a Hong Kong listed company focusing on the applications of solar energy technology in the construction of energy-efficient buildings. The company has research and manufacturing facilities in Zhuhai and Hunan and offices in the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Nigeria. Its subsidiaries include Zhuhai Singyes Green Building Technology Company, Zhuhai Singyes Renewable Energy Technology, Zhuhai Singyes Opto-electrical Technology, Hunan Singyes Solar Technology, and Singyes Engineering Company.

Mr. Liu studied material science at Wuhan University of Science and Technology from which he graduated in 1986. He first worked at the Shanxi Glass Manufacturing Company, and in 1989 he moved to Zhuhai and became the production manager at Zhuhai Glass Company. In 1991 he was recruited by Zhuhai Singyes Safety Glass Company to be its sales manager. Very early on Mr. Liu realised the danger of our heavy reliance on fossil fuel energy and persuaded his company to move into the business of solar energy. He became the general manager of Singyes Green Building Technology in 1995 and assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Singyes Solar Technologies in 2007. Under his leadership Singyes became the leading company in solar energy building technologies in China. Its products include solar cells, photovoltaic modules, solar thermal collectors, air source heat pump, selective absorber coating, ITO film, smart LC film and glass, curtain wall materials, etc. The company also provides engineering services such as building integrated photovoltaic, integrated solar thermal system, curtain walls and solar house, etc. Much of these technologies are the fruits of Singyes' own research. Its research institute employs several hundred workers including PhD and postdoctoral engineers, with Mr. Liu himself serving as director. The institute has been involved in many national, provincial and municipal research projects including the "863 Program". For his contributions to the development of solar energy technologies he was awarded the Guangdong Science and Technology Award and the Zhuhai Special Contribution to Science and Technology Award.

Despite his busy schedule, Mr. Liu still finds time to lend his expertise to advise Zhuhai, Guangdong, and National Governments on solar energy policies. He is the Vice-Chairman of China's Committee on the Application of Photovoltaic in Buildings, Head of the Technology Section of the Guangdong's Committee on Standardisation of Photovoltaic Systems, and also Chairman of the Zhuhai Society on Reduction of Energy Consumption. He hopes to use these platforms to promote more efficient use of energy, to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel, and to create a healthier living environment for us and for our future generations.

Mr. Chairman, in recognition of Mr. Liu's distinguished contributions to the solar energy industry, his tireless promotion of efficient use of energy and development of proprietary intellectual property rights, and his efforts to improve the environment, it is my privilege to present him to you for the award of an Honorary Fellowship.
