Dr Kennedy YH Wong

Dr Kennedy YH Wong, BBS, JP, is a prominent lawyer, business entrepreneur and community leader. Dr Wong obtained his bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Kent, before being admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Hong Kong. In 1990, he became the Managing Partner of Philip KH Wong, Kennedy YH Wong & Co. In 1992, he set up a representative office in Shanghai, which was the first foreign law firm’s representative office approved by the China’s Ministry of Justice. Dr Wong has served as the Chairman of the Hong Kong United Youth Association and Vice-Chairman of the All-China Youth Federation. He also co-founded the Hong Kong-Taiwan Exchange Foundation. In addition, Dr Wong has contributed generously to support many charity projects in remote and impoverished regions in the Mainland. Dr Wong was awarded one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Hong Kong in 1998 and one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World by the Junior Chamber International in 2003. In the same year, Dr Wong was appointed a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. In 2006, the Hong Kong SAR government awarded him a Bronze Bauhinia Star Medal.

A Citation for Honorary Fellow Dr Kennedy YH Wong

Mr Chairman, in recognition of Dr Kennedy YH Wong’s outstanding professional and business achievements, as well as his distinguished contributions to higher education and the communities in Hong Kong and Mainland China, it is my privilege to present him to you for the award of an Honorary Fellowship.

For his good deeds and achievements, Dr Wong was awarded one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Hong Kong in 1998 and one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World by the Junior Chamber International in 2003. In the same year, Dr Wong was appointed a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He has also earned himself two honorary doctorates in law, one from his British alma mater, the University of Kent, in 2007, and the other from the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2013. In 2006, the Hong Kong SAR government awarded him a Bronze Bauhinia Star Medal in appreciation of his significant community service contribution to the Hong Kong society.

It is worth noting that Dr Wong has a very close association with the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), our mother institution. He has served as a member of the HKBU Council for three terms from 2002 to 2010. During this period, he chaired or deputized a number of committees, such as the Personnel Committee, the Audit Committee, the Student Residence Management Board, and the NTT International House Management Board. It deserves special mention that Dr Wong has contributed several mega donations of over HK$20 million in total to the University to support the cutting-edge research and development in Chinese medicine and the establishment of the Distinguished Visiting Professorship Scheme. Currently, Dr Wong is chairing the HKBU Foundation, and he continues to help in fund-raising campaigns for the University.

Dr Wong was born in a family that has been deep into educational philanthropy. With this heritage, he has made numerous sizable contributions over the years for student scholarship funds and enhancement of teaching and learning facilities for local and overseas universities.

Dr Wong is also acclaimed for his superb aspirations to “contribute back to the society”. He is particularly concerned about civic and higher education for the younger generation and the well-being of his country. Since the 1990s, Dr Wong has been unsparing in his efforts to promote whole person development and patriotic education among the youths of Hong Kong. Being the Chairman of the Hong Kong United Youth Association and Vice-Chairman of the All-China Youth Federation, Dr Wong has organized many events and activities to enhance and deepen young people’s understanding of their motherland and the related national issues and developments. At the same time, he co-founded the Hong Kong-Taiwan Exchange Foundation to strengthen exchanges, communications, and collaborations among young people across the straits, among Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and the Mainland. In addition, Dr Wong has contributed generously to support many charity projects in remote and impoverished regions in the Mainland. For example, in Sichuan, Hebei and elsewhere, he donated books and money to many Project Hope schools.

Dr Wong has strong business acumen. Started from the 1980s, he has been proactively engaging in new business ventures in the Mainland while developing and managing his legal practices. Notably, from 2007 to 2008, Dr Wong successfully accomplished the corporate re-structuring projects for two listed companies and helped rescue the companies from the edge of collapse.
