A Citation for Honorary Fellow Mr Heinrich Wang
Mr Heinrich Wang is a renowned artist and successful entrepreneur with an initial career in a variety of fields of art. After completing his study at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, USA, Mr Wang founded the first glass workshop in Taiwan, and started a career in glass art and teaching. In 1993, Mr Wang was invited to hold an exhibition at the Palace Museum in Beijing. Seven of Mr Wang's works were chosen to be permanently housed in this Museum as the first artefacts of contemporary glass craftsmanship to join the Museum's collection. In 1994, Mr Wang established a company named Tittot dedicated to producing modern Chinese glass art. He was also invited to present his works at the annual symposium of the world-renowned Glass Art Society in the same year. Many of his glass works were collected by top museums worldwide, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK, the Hida Takayama Museum of Art in Japan, the Corning Museum of Glass in the USA, and the Palace Museum in Beijing. In order to promote communication in art across the Strait, Mr Wang founded the first crystal glass museum in Mainland China in 1998, which was also the first in the greater China regions. He was also invited to create “Millennium Dragon - Complete Fusion” as a symbol of the Chinese Spirit of the 20th Century. This was collected by the National Palace Museum in Taipei. In 2003, the glass works of Mr Wang were included for display in the permanent collection of the Messe Frankfurt.
With the great accomplishments in glass art, Mr Wang took a further step to realize his lifelong dream of renovating the Chinese art of porcelain. In 2003, Mr Wang founded the porcelain brand “NewChi”. As a result of his persistent experimentation, NewChi overcame the inherent constraints of porcelain – 15% shrinkage and deformation when heated – and created products that transcended the traditional artistic conventions of round and circular shape and sealed cavity. NewChi also shifts the meaning of “extraordinary” porcelain from being just “classical, gorgeous, and elegant” to highlighting the qualities contemporary porcelain should possess – the confidence of a new century, the image of modernity and the spirit of the traditional culture. As his concepts and designs are well perceived and recognized by the world, his porcelain works, like his glass works, have become highly sought collections of celebrities such as Prince Charles, Japanese Architect Tadao Ando, and American pop icon Lady Gaga. The Work “Auspicious Dragon” has been collected by the US Library of Congress, and the works in the “Phoenix” series by the National Museum of Taiwan History. In recognition of his contributions and achievements in the art of porcelain, Mr Wang was awarded the Martell Artist of the Year in 2005, and Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2010, which was awarded to artist from Taiwan for the first time. Inspirited by a sense of calling to create a new era for Chinese porcelain art while retaining its traditional essence, Mr Wang has led NewChi to a new beautiful chapter of the art.
Mr Chairman, in view of the distinguished accomplishments of Mr Heinrich Wang in culture and art, as well as in recognition of his broad vision and his deep concern for the humanitas in artistic representations, it is my privilege to present him to you for the award of an Honorary Fellowship.
